Noxious Weed Control
The term weed can refer to any plant that is growing in an undesirable location. Weeds usually have vigorous growth and can be difficult to control, especially perennial weeds that may have evolved several methods to ensure their survival. Many so-called weeds have culinary or medicinal properties. This may explain why weeds such as Blackberry, found in the South West of Western Australia, may have been introduced and subsequently naturalised.
Weeds can be categorized as annual, biennial or perennial.
Annual plants germinate and mature in one season. They leave a supply of seeds behind that ensure the continuation of the next generation. These plants should be treated prior to seeding.
Biennial plants grow over two seasons before dying off. In the first season they develop a long taproot and in the second season they produce an upright stem that flowers and seeds. They are most easily removed in the first year by applying a systemic herbicide at the seedling stage.
Perennial plants have fleshy roots or bulbs that store nutrients allowing the plant to regrow if its leaves and stems are damaged. These plants can live for many seasons, making them difficult to control as they can flower and produce seed over a long period.
Herbicide treatments can be post-emergent (effective after seedling stage) or pre-emergent (effective prior to seedling stage). Treatments can target a broad range of plants (non-selective) or they can target either broad-leaf or perennial grasses (selective). Selective pesticides for domestic use are generally of the ‘Weed n’ Feed’ variety.
