How can I help control spiders?
Most spiders build some kind of web. The vast majority of webs in your garden will be home to harmless spiders which may even be beneficial by catching flies.
Many harmful spiders are relatively small and nocturnal. They spend the day hidden away close to their nests which, in some cases, are little more than small balls of what looks like cotton wool. One such spider common in Western Australia is the red back. Keep an eye out for their small nests on the undersides of garden furniture, around plant pots or under childrens toys out side or internally near doors and windows.
By destroying spiders’ webs you will not destroy the spider. Many will reconstruct their homes in a few hours. It is important that you destroy the mature spiders by spraying them with a proprietary insecticide or by squashing them.
